Choose with a reason

Choosing a VPN: policies, evidence, and fit

Evaluate a VPN using a clear requirement, documented privacy terms, platform support, funding, and the commitment behind a plan.

Build a useful understanding.

A useful VPN decision begins with a requirement, not a ranking. Write down the device, activity, and routing behavior you need. Then ask which claims are supported by documentation or observations, which features are available on your platform, and which tradeoffs remain. This collection gives you a way to organize that work without inventing a universal winner.

The selection guide covers the larger evaluation process, from reading a policy to interpreting an audit's scope. The free-versus-paid guide focuses on the arrangement behind the price: funding, access limits, practical usefulness, and the commitment involved. They are complementary reading paths, not lists of products to buy.

Keep notes on what you checked and when. “Not tested” and “unclear” are legitimate findings. A short, honest record of the evidence is more useful than a confident choice built from a few attractive badges. Revisit the decision when your requirements or a provider's offering materially change.
