VPN fundamentals: understand the route

Beginner-friendly VPN guides covering encrypted tunnels, provider trust, proxies, Tor, and the limits of changing your IP address.

Build a useful understanding.

A VPN is easier to evaluate when you know which problem it is meant to solve. Begin with the path between your device, an intermediate server, and a destination. Then separate that path from your browser identity, account logins, and the information you choose to share. Those are different parts of the privacy picture, even when a product presents them under one label.

This collection is a starting point rather than a shopping list. Read the introductory guide first, then use the comparison of VPNs, proxies, and Tor to understand how application coverage and trust can differ. You do not need to memorize technical acronyms before making progress. Aim to explain your intended route in an ordinary sentence and identify the applications that will use it.

As you read, keep one concrete task in mind. Accessing an internal work system, changing a personal device's route, and reducing linkability during a browsing session are not identical goals. The guides help you ask more specific questions without assuming that one tool addresses all of them.

Where does the tunnel start and end?
Which applications use the new route?
What can still identify the session?
